The Sermon on the Mount is the greatest sermon ever preached, but understanding this greatest of all sermons can be a challenge. The kingdom which Jesus proclaims is backwards, it does not correlate with any of the world’s values. The world seeks to elevate us based on our accomplishments, but God elevates us based on what he has done. To understand this sermon, we must walk through the doorway of the Beatitudes, a list of nine blessings proclaimed to those whom the world counts as the least, for it is the least who see most clearly: the salvation which Jesus proclaims is not based on anything you bring to the table, but on that which you are served from the Lord’s table.
